Selected Poems of SUN Damei

Translated by WANG Changling

Spring Trees

Divide the vast crystal blue sky, with branches
Into innumerable blank spaces
Only to leave to free birds
Freedom
Having undergone in their inner world
Myriad wind, rain, frost and snow
The trees, in silence, are coming to understand
As trees
They have their own dignity
Spring, is still
With her tender little hands, waving
Holding high the past ignored

Nature always comes in silence
And goes in silence

The Swallows

I’m leaving. Farewell to everything in the thatched cottage
Farewell to the swallow nest on the beam
That used to bring me slight warmth during the bleak nights
I’m leaving with Spring.
The swallows and I say to each other: adieu!

Next Spring, my mum’s parents are, also by the vernal breeze
Blown to elsewhere
When they surmount the last ridge
They gaze back to the home village
Where the setting sun shines upon
Those lingering swallows
Those swallows that twittered, whispered softly
Kept me company throughout my childhood, lonely, yet warm

Life always ends in farewell, and thus starts anew.

The Last Supper

Once in a lifetime, each person is destined to: Have the last supper
All banquet attendees are on the way
But the time and location
Are unknown
No man can predict
During the countdown of his life
Those unpredictable emergencies

The last supper is dined
With the Devil seated across
In the graveyard invisible to you

Tiny Yellow Flower on the Slope

When the gunfire is over
On the battlefield
What remains more horrible than death is loneness
Even the air is rising and falling
In the struggle between life and death

A solider, the last one
With the help of wind and smoke
Is staggeringly struggling to his feet
He is alive, with just momentary heartbeats
All of a sudden, his eyes light up
Not far away, a tiny yellow flower on the slope
Is blooming amid wind and smoke! The scene
Excites him, thrills him and moves him to tears
Now, toward the last miraculous gift of his life
Hes crawling

The moment he clasps it, he hesitates
And gently unclasps his hand:
The tiny yellow flower on the slope
Is still abloom beautifully
But he closes his eyes for good

Time

No man can transcend time
Even God who creates light and all creatures
Cannot transcend Himself
In His own light

Each silhouette moving in the shadow of time
Is a concrete image of life
And life is a one-way street
No man
Can turn around and come back

One day, one year, one lifetime
Life is a lamp
That God hides in our body
When the lamp consumes the limited source of light
The initial darkness is restored bit by bit
And thus between life and death
The eternal distance is maintained
