Taj Mahal

Gong Xuan

At Agra Fort, I’m watching from across the river
listening to the gentle murmurs of Jumna,
sympathizing with its rippling sorrows.
Without desire, the Mirror Room’s passionate gaze has long gone.
Only morning breeze and harmonics like tidal waves in fits and starts,
have no idea where they will end.

I can only look out from the sorrowful window, overlooking the white dome
its dazzling whiteness, reflecting the infinite blue of the sky
Deeply ingrained pain, rushing towards me
Shah Jahan. Taj Mahal. Death, or rebirth
defies concrete and unambiguous description. Gold rod and war
roiled the sweet scenes of love in a breeze
The most beautiful wedding dress, is floating in the mist of time.

I know, the upbringings of these people
were entwined with numerous diamonds and jewels,
corals and jades, and distinguished titles. But their secret sorrows
were heavy as granites, pressing the immovable doors and windows
The onlooker knows better the unsightly oldness of deadwood.
By the riverside of Jumna, plants once tried to win the heart of one woman.
But now, it doesn’t give a care about the breath of marbles.
Love so deep as the abyss. In both the noisy human world and the pure divine world
there exist worldly affairs. But the soul of a captive
will never fit in the body of someone else.
The memory of rock pigeon has awakened from slumber
Life must rush forward, and leave a subtle place
for the invisible figure.

I wish to name it with a noble name
call it a memorial, engrave on it an epigraph of love
with no need to dig out the truth.
A drop of tear is enough to bring solace to lasting solitude.

Jeffers’ Stone House and Eagle Tower

Gong Xuan

Carmel Bay, the silent wilderness
and the roaring of waves, weave the loneliness of a sojourner
into a web of malaise. Birds fly, the mist rises
I cannot see the silhouette of the Stone House
or a trace of the Eagle Tower
The so-called the end of the world
is just the other side of the sea, the coldness of the cliffs
can only make stone fall in love with stone.

The abandoned stones of Angkor Wat, the bricks of the Great Wall
the pebbles of King Arthur’s castle beach
the gravel of Tulbarelita
broken ceramics, meteorite debris, and remnant steles in the graveyard
are solid as a rock. Between the gaps
some kind of thought is growing

guarding the fort of the soul, the old days
have long used up the antennas of thought

Scottish ballads, Steinway piano
old photos and ancient maps, withered leaves in front of Shelley’s grave
the bricks of Babylon with cuneiform
and puppets of ancient times, they can defend a woman
from the time in oracle, but how could the lines
engraved by poetry, indicate dreams of the future

The Stone House is unable to guess at seasons
Sea lions are roaring, their rich sounds
drowned in the waves
Looking ahead, there lies the gorgeous coastal scenery
Eucalyptus, cypress, Monterey pines
They are as they used to be. They stand upright
like a winner, constructing for tortured souls
the Eagle Tower on the cliff. In the mist over the sea
the fragrance of lavender, rosemary, geranium
is slowly dispersing. Memories are pecked broken by waterfowls
Nobody can follow his bigoted course, while stealing the rain and sunshine
To blame a tree or the coldness of the Stone House and the Eagle Tower
with the pain of the secular

Give your heart to Una
Whoever goes there
Will become its bosom friend.
