The Amilcare Solferini National Literary Competition started in 2016 from an idea of Alessandro Actis Grosso, president of CARC, the cultural association of Rodallo, a small town in northern Italy.
Alessandro is also related to the Rodallo poet Amilcare Solferini (1870-1929), whose real name was Vittorio Actis Dato .
The purpose of the contest is to remember this poet who was a cantor of his time in the past.
An interesting aspect of the Contest is the Stumbling in Culture Project, which provides for the chosen poets the engraving of their poetic verses on terracotta tiles which are hung in Rodallo and in other towns in order to create “La via dei Poeti”- “ The Poets’ Road”.
To all intents and purposes Rodallo can therefore boast of the designation The Town of Poets .
On each of these tiles, in addition to the serial number, the website url is also engraved where it is possible to consult the historical archive of the Literary Competition.
Since 2024, the Competition has been enriched with a new section open to foreign authors, becoming Amilcare Solferini International with 65 participants from 41 countries on 5 continents.
The first prize winner was young Pakistani poet Anila Bukhari, followed by Amirah Al Wassif (Egypt) and Huguette Bertrand (Canada) - second tied prize- and Sue Zhu (New Zealand), Amita Sanghavi (Oman) and Maria Lisella (USA) - third tied prize.
Belgian poet and editor Germain Droogenbroodt will see his lines of “Writing Poetry” engraved on the terracotta tile.
There were two special prizes: Colombian poet Pedro Licona was awarded the Guido Chiarelli Special Prize for a poem on the lights of Turin, while Stanley H. Barkan, American poet and publisher, was awarded the Aeronwy Thomas Special Prize: Barkan had been the American editor of Aeronwy, the daughter of Dylan Thomas.
