Above the Roof (a group of poems)
Rhapsodia
1. Above the Roof
Above the roof is the sky
Above the sky is human thought
The three dogs have no idea of all this
They care only about their master’s safety and their own lunch
Who says there is no free lunch
I can get it wherever I like. Over the faraway mountains
Snowflakes are fluttering
The prayer banners bless me to be alive. Oh, the desert
The prairie, the summer with no man in sight
My sorrow is unfathomable like the time
2. The Summer Solstice, on No. 353 Bus
On the seat vacant yesterday is now sitting a stranger
On the seat taken by a pretty girl yesterday
Is now sitting an old lady. I wonder
When I get off, my seat will be taken by someone else
It will not be vacant there, like a black-and-white photo
Suddenly I have an impulse
To take all the seats one by one. This is the summer solstice
On No. 353 busfrom Yiling High School to Yangcha Road
At the terminus, some transfer to other buses
Some get off. Goodbye. Maybe some will never
Be seen again from tomorrow on
Summer has come.I stare at the faces
Shifting from the starting station to the terminus
I rarely get off midway
Enduring various noises from mobile phones
I keep smiling, never to disturb
Others’happiness. The way ahead is still very long
3. A Group of Elephants Dancing Across the Latitude Lines
A group of carefree elephants, as if from fairy tales
Are going northward, dancing across the latitude lines
And I am among them
Through the forests, the fields, the mountains, the factories, the streets
The windows, and the taverns, before people’ssurprised eye, through dodges of life
They swagger
Walking through the human world, noble, elegant, naughty
Muddy, smiling, drunk, young, weather-beaten, sick, where are we going?
On the planet, anywhere can be home to us, with children and love
What a vast world! Never are we hypocritical, feigning
Masking, exclusive, aggressive, affected, or flattering
We are natural, following no set patterns. Winds and rains
Never see us flinch. We dance across the latitudelines
Like alien visitors
4. The Silkworms of Night Eating Dark Mulberry Leaves
(Grain Rain sees warbling turtledoves plume their feathers)
Grain rain feeds the wheat grains full. With the south breeze
Wine aroma permeates the village
What a wonderful place where the birds nest
Under their wings are grains they will never eat up
With leaves and dew, the pear trees are hiding
The birds’ shyness of becoming new mothers
Over the tea hills opposite, the tender leaves
Are waiting for the slender fingers
Now, I am back in the South
Warbling turtledoves are pluming their feathers. The sun comes out of the clouds
5. About the Cotton
I am not talking about the elusive clouds
But about the honest cotton
“When the cottonis sold
I will buy some polyester cloth to make trousers for you”, said my mother
That was in 1984
Then my moustache was still like furry down
The first new dress in my life came from the cotton
Which felt warm like my father
He passed away very early. At the sight of cotton
I would gaze at it and then lower my head
In 1990, when the cotton was ripening
My wife was going to give birth. I crossed the cotton field to find my mother-in-law
The eye-catching cotton seemed ablaze at night
The cotton bolls were like drum beats of happiness in the wind
Now a father myself, I am learning to be like cotton
Rather than the elusive clouds
6. I Keep Rubbing the Flower Fragrance with My Eye
On the withered leaves and the ant feelers
Are the quarreling
The flame, and the frivolous youth
I keep rubbing the flower fragrance with my eye
As if revising awriting. The instant I say I will delete the adjective
The peach blossoms cast their reflection in the water
Tranquility follows the noises
Crimson blood, dark hairs, yellow skin
The setting sun is like a slow-moving hedgehog
