The plants meditate still
in the classic lines of the Spring and Autumn Annals
I bask alone in the morning sun of early spring
I find myself in the land of my ancestral sage
contemplating Origins of Excellence and Intelligence
of the Tai Mountains
I find the man revered by smoking rain and flowing clouds
Time gently sows its slow seeds from the sky
and history’s dust is rinsed from consciousness
A Nation of Manners: on this the masters all agreed
as I made my way between other countries
I thought I saw his lonely traces
the great inheritance of all his descendants
they say seventy-two sages followed him
and three thousand disciples
carried the torches of his thought
through the wilds of history
flames to illuminate the great land of Lu
including the crowded towns of our quantum era
and my own hands on which a copy
of the Analects of Confucius rests
Kong is a Chinese character that nurtures his descendants
through the voids of time and space it enables us
to cross the globe in the radiance of our own tongue
it is a bridge connecting the seven worlds and single planet
the insights of Confucius enlighten the whole world
Its four strokes evoke simplicity
connected to the roots of a family name
that thrived through Shang Dynasty generations
and the shifting vastness of time
to crown the lives of the people
with the ordered birthright of name and nature
morality and justice
where the living republic of manners may endure
