自古秋有萧条、悲凉之感，诗家词人笔下秋之悲音更是不胜枚举。然而，唐朝诗人刘禹锡的《秋词》却一改传统秋词的凄凉情调，赞美了秋天的雄浑壮丽。此诗豪放大气，令人振奋。本期《华章英韵》有幸邀请到现居布拉格的赵宜忠先生执笔主译，赵先生从事翻译多年，尤其擅长古诗词英译。一起欣赏这期的美诗美译！
Since ancient times, Autumn often relates to depression and sadness, which are also the main tones of numerous poems on autumn. However, A Verse on Autumn, written by Liu Yuxi of the Tang dynasty, sings the grandeur of autumn instead of its sentimental tone of ancient poems. The poem is bold, vigorous and inspiring. For this issue of Chinese Verse in English Rhyme, it's a great honor for us to invite Mr. Zhao Yizhong to join us. Mr. Zhao, now in Prague, has been engaged in translation for many years and especially excels in translating ancient Chinese poems into English. But Autumn's far better than early spring I'd say.
One day a crane broke thro clouds to the welkin high,
Arousing my poetic mood upto the blue sky.
The Translator's Notes
此诗诗人以议论起笔，断然否定了前人悲秋的观念，表现出一种激越向上的诗情。首句“自古逢秋悲寂寥”即明确指出自古以来，人们每逢到了秋天就感叹秋天的寂寞萧索。既然从古至今，我在翻译时采用了现在完成来表达人们一直如此！“我言秋日胜春朝”。“我言”，直抒胸臆，态度鲜明，说出的是诗人的自信。“秋日胜春朝”，用对比手法，热情赞美秋天，比那欣欣向荣的春天更胜过一筹，这是对自古以来那种悲秋的论调的有力否定。“But autumn's far better than early spring I'd say.”为了押韵，我把我言 I'd say 至于句尾，也起到了强调作用！“晴空一鹤排云上”。“排”，这里是冲的意思。这句选择了典型事物具体生动地勾勒了一幅壮美的画面。我是这样翻译的 ：“One day a crane breaks thro clouds to the welkin high”, 一天，一只仙鹤冲破云层飞入高高的苍穹。为了押韵high置后！“便引诗情到碧霄”。如果说，上句侧重写秋的“形美”，那么最后一句则突出秋的“神韵”，使“秋日胜春朝”的观点表现得更鲜明，更有力度。这种情景引起了我的诗兴，也随之进入了蔚蓝的天空！“Arousing my poetic mood upto the blue sky.”总的说来，我这首译文每行12个音节，AABB 完全韵，力求做到忠于原文，通俗易懂，念起来上口！ 水平有限，请各位指正！
In this poem, the poet started his writing from discussion, categorically negating the previous concept of sadness and showing an upward poetic mood.
The first sentence “Since old times in Autumn all've felt lone and sad aye ,” is clearly pointed out that since ancient times, all people sigh autumn is lone and sad. "Since ancient times", I have used the present perfect tense in translation to express people always like this!
“But Autumn's far better than early spring I'd say.” “I'd say” directly expressed the poet's confidence. “Autumn is far better than early spring”, with the contrast technique, he enthusiastically praised the autumn, surpassing the flourishing spring, this is just to deny powerfully the sad autumn theory since ancient times. For rhyme I put “I'd say” at the end of the line, also expressing emphasis!
“One day a crane broke thro clouds to the welkin high.” “Pai”, here means rush, break thro. This line is that the poet chose something typical to concretely and vividly outline a magnificent picture. This is my translation：“One day a crane broke thro clouds to the welkin high.” I put high behind welkin for rhyme.
“Arousing my poetic mood upto the blue sky.” If the above line focuses on the “form of beauty” of autumn, then the last line highlights the “romantic charm” of autumn, so that the “autumn days win the early spring.” This viewpoint shows it more vivid, and more powerful. This scene aroused my poetic interest, which was brought up to the blue sky! So I translated it into “Arousing my poetic mood upto the blue sky.”
